You Can't Keep a Wise Man Down!

Our HDCA Manager, Doug Sandvick, usually does not hang out with religious giants (just giants of retail), but a senseless act of vandalism set him in motion to find a "Fourth" Wise Man for St. Andrew's Episcopal Church Nativity Scene in Historic Downtown Chelan two days before Christmas.  His quest to find a new Wise Man by Christmas Eve took him down a long but worthwhile path from North Central, WA to St. Louis, MO.  Thank you to Main Street Gallery for all of their assistance and the generous donations from the public and members of the Lake Chelan Rotary that helped pay for the shipping!

Downtown Chelan's "Ribbon of Hope" a First!

Working with our Christmas lighting vendor, "Lights for All Seasons", HDCA Manager Doug Sandvick designed the first ever street light display that commemorates "Breast Cancer Awareness Month".  The 5'-9" x 2'-9" fully-lighted display was mounted on the historic blue light pole in front of The Vogue on Woodin Avenue in downtown Chelan during October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Doug purchased this first prototype in honor of his wife Mary's two sisters who have had breast cancer--only one is a survivor.  If you are interested in sponsoring a ribbon of your own at the manufacturer's special price of $300 (includes manufacturing, shipping and honorary plaque), please click "Ribbon of Hope" for a sponsorship form.  (Picture: Lake Chelan Mirror)

Thank You to Mayor Bob Goedde for purchasing the second Ribbon of Hope.  Local families (Vaglio, Adams, & Hopkins families) teamed up and purchased a third ribbon.  All will be istalled for October 2010.

Downtown Chelan's 1st Annual Wine Walk & Shop:

A Successful "Walk" in Many Ways

A BIG thank you and a ringing toast to the dozens of volunteers (Gerry Ustanik and Jennie Simpson shown top left) who sacificed their time on a gorgeous fall afternoon in Chelan!  And of course, thank you to all the wineries and business locations!HDCA Manager, Doug Sandvick, commented:

I knew this was going to be fun when I volunteered to pour wine at one of the 8 downtown locations, but I never expected how much work it would be.  I was really tired after an afternoon of pouring.  My hat's off to the pros who do this every day at the wineries!  Also, another job well done on "Rhythms On The Lake" by Mike Steele and all of his chamber staff and volunteers.  The fun never seems to end in Chelan with our great tourism partnerships.

Mike Steele could not give an exact number at 4 PM on Saturday of punch cards that had been purchased for Downtown Chelan's Wine Walk & Shop, but he was smiling!

The Bell from the First Lady of The Lake Tolls Again

The HDCA and the Lake Chelan Histoical Society joined forces to create the first "Historical Aid Station" at the Shore to Shore Martahon.  Our HDCA Manager and student vounteers (Madie & Micki Harrison and Corbet and Katy Sandvick) worked the aid station at mile marker 13, which was also the starting point for the Half Marathon. When that race began, the old "Lady" bell (shown in bottom picture on the table) went back into service ringing the start.  Runners from the full marathon were greeted later by the old bell again and a cold cup of water.

Although the HDCA/LCHS aid station was not voted the best by the runners (a bunch of people shaking their hula skirts won the $300 prize) we knew we were still the best and definitely the most educational!  In fact, one runner waiting for the half marathon to begin, identified his grandfather in the 1928 Manson Boys Track photograph that was on our display board.
